LAWRENCE A. G. JOHNSON, INC. ATTORNEY AND COUNSELOR AT LAW [address redacted] TULSA, OKLAHOMA 74114 LAWRENCE A. G. JOHNSON BELVA M. BROOKS (918) [phone number redacted] (918) [phone number redacted] October 16, 1983 Board of Trustees Washington and Lee University Lexington, Virginia Gentlemen: Both of my daughters who attend Randolph Macon Woman's College have informed me that W&L has gone co-educational. This is most disturbing news to them as well as to me. When I last visited W&L, I could see multiple signs of general deterioration, more specifically, that the fraternities were enlisting thug mentality by generally destroying their assets, and the univer- sity sitting by and allowing the tradition of turning out gentlemen to deteriorate. The elimination of traditional dress has also generally added to this problem. Now, you have completely abandoned the most fundamental of traditions, that is, the utilization of a men's college in order to assure that women would not be added as a distraction to the basic purposes of the university. I feel, therefore, that the trustees have completely abrogated their responsibilities to the fundamental objectives of the university. Accordingly, I have revoked my testamentary trust of $100,000 set up for the university. My son, a straight A student, will not be applying for admission. I regret the $10,000 donation I made earlier to the university. Evidently, the university is more interested in numbers rather than quality. Is there a chance the Board and the President could resign and allow a new group to salvage what is left? Very truly yours, [Lawrence A Johnson] LAWRENCE A. G.
