To acknowledge that this happy result could not have been achieved without the generous gift support of the University’s constituency is simply to state a financial fact of academic life. But in a period of rapid social change, when public attitudes reveal so much uncertainty about the role of higher education, this support bears witness to a sincere vote of confidence by many alumni, parents, corporations, foundations and friends. For this Washing- ton and Lee is especially grateful. Among those who know the University best it is im- possible to separate its individuality, its special character and personality, from the fact of its independence. For almost two and a quarter centuries, Washington and Lee has been free to exercise its own initiative, imagination and professional judgment in shaping its educational program—free to take the risks of experiment and in- novation. In exchange for this right to “‘be itself,” it has always welcomed the implicit responsibility to raise operating funds from regular and gift sources, and has been willing to accept the verdict of the market place in the competition of ideas. Through great wars and great depressions, as well as in times of peace and prosperity, alumni and friends have vigilantly protected this priceless element of indepen- dence with gifts and service that have assured Washing- ton and Lee’s financial integrity. It has happened again in fiscal 1971, and the University extends a special word of thanks to the many who worked so generously in its behalf. ST AN, RosBeErRT E. R. HUNTLEY President Washington and Lee University THE IMPORTANCE OF GIFT SUPPORT The charts in Figs. 1 and 2 show the relative importance of tuition, endow- ment income, and gifts in meeting Washington and Lee’s educational and general operating expenses (i.e., all expenses other than those for dormitories, dining hall, bookstore, and other income-producing proper- ties that operate on a_ break-even basis). The chart in Fig. 1 indicates that in 1970-71 the income from tuition and endowment paid for 80.9% of educational and general expenses. The chart in Fig. 2 shows how gifts from all sources, made expressly for the support of current operations, compared with educational and gen- eral expenses. It is apparent that this income has not kept pace with the rapid rise in the cost of a Washington and Lee education. % of %of Total Voluntary %of Educational Educational Educational Support for Educational & General & General Endowment &General Current & General Year Expense Tuition Expense Income Expense Operations Expense 64-65 $2,642,196 $1341,796 50.78 $730,579 27.65 $757,196 28.65 65-66 2,782,132 1,591,767 57.21 792,609 28.49 604,696 21.73 66-67 3,124,262 1,834,790 58.73 794,917 25.44 452,770 14.49 67-68 3,663,258 2,196,997 59.97 792,869 21.64 466,339 12.73 68-69 4,343,335 2,446,940 56.34 846,901 19.50 509,037 11.72 69-70 4,413,061 2,537,868 57.51 855,846 19.39 532,067 12.06 70-71 4,546,790 2,827,505 62.19 850,602 18.71 737,690 16.22 Operating Gap: 1964-1971 , "pe a Total Vor Supa or Curent Operations $5000 $ 4500 ee aren Jf ie ang ate $ 4500 $ 4000 Oo 73% 19% e 24% = $4000 $ 3500 & & e 18% $3500 $ 3000 ¢ eo 16% $3000 $2500 alte 22% Tuma $2500 $ 2000 $2000 $ 1500 $1500 $ 1000 iain $1000 $500 ENDowMent $500 . ap ~ 3 a Oo —8 $0 en o o soln WB mmm EDUCATIONAL & GENERAL EXPENSE F 1 g . a ARE a. ee - feae pel — : 7 i i ee ‘ 4 = GIFTS TO WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY The following is a summary of gifts made to Washington and Lee during the period July 1, 1970 - June 30, 1971. LEE ASSOCIATES The importance of annual giving in support of current operations receiv- ed new emphasis in 1970-71 when ‘The Robert E. Lee Associates, through a committee of members and with ap- proval of the Board of Trustees, decid- ed to channel all contributions toward the University’s educational and gen- eral budget. In making this decision the Lee As- sociates and the Board recognized that Washington and Lee had entered a period of maximum need, and that increased gift support was essential to offset the escalating cost of operating the University. In another move to develop the leadership role of ‘The Robert E. Lee Associates, the Board created a new category of donors to be known as ‘The General’s Council.”” Included in this select company are those who give, or pledge to give, the sum of $10,000 for current operating purposes in a span of twelve consecutive years. On June 30, 1971, 43 Lee Associates had become charter members of ‘The General's Council. During the year the number of liv- ing members of ‘The Robert E. Lee As- sociates rose by 33 persons to 271. This total includes 197 alumni, 50 parents and 24 friends, 151 of whom were contributors at the Lee Associ- ates level ($1,000 or more in a twelve- month period) in 1970-71. It also should be reported that the Fund fell short of its stated $325,000 goal for the second consecutive year, and that participation dropped by 2.4%. But even these disappointments were tempered by the fact that two large, non-recurring gifts, made to Washington and Lee from sources not included in the Alumni Fund, offset the $22,000 Alumni Fund shortage that otherwise would have contributed to a University operating deficit. A comparison of the 1970-71 Fund results with those of previous years, however, gives reason for sober reflec- tion on the purpose of the Fund and on its great po- tential as a source of current income to the University. Except for 1969-70, for instance, the chart in Fig. 3 shows an uninterrupted seven-year upward trend in con- tributions, whereas the chart in Fig. 4 shows an alarming failure to increase the degree of participation by alumni. Herein lies a great untapped potential for future years. At only $10 each, non-contributing alumni in 1970-71 could add almost $79,000 to the 1971-72 Fund. Equally a cause for concern is the trend evidenced by the chart in Fig. 5. Since 1967-68, despite the increase in total dollars, the Fund has provided for a steadily dimin- ishing share of the University’s educational and general expense. Had the Fund met its $325,000 goal, this trend would have been reversed, and the share of actual edu- cational and general expense would have risen to 7.1%. The $360,000 goal for 1971-72 is about half of the amount needed to close the gap between expected in- come from regular sources and the educational and gen- eral expenses that are budgeted at $5,361,370 for this year. Through gift sup- port, Washington and Lee has been able to maintain an excellent 11:1 student-faculty ratio, which keeps most classes small and provides time for professors to give indi- vidual students personal attention. Today’s library requires microfilm, microfiche, tapes, recordings, slides. Just for its library, Washington and Lee needs almost a quarter of a million dollars annually — and costs continue to rise each year. Lloyd H. Richmond James S. Shields James D. Although the University is proud of its 11 intercollegiate teams (one of which, the lacrosse team, was ranked ninth nation- ally last year), it is equally as proud of an intramural sports program that involves over two-thirds of its students. A part of every gift dollar goes toward providing safe equipment, excellent coaching, and fine training facilities for the total sports program. Saul R. Weinsier Andrew J. White George W. But it costs money to keep the campus attrac- tive and serviceable. Preventive upkeep—as practiced by the University—extends the serviceability of buildings. From the operat- ing budget comes the money to pay for the necessary tools, machinery, and skilled personnel. Relatively unfavorable economic conditions caused a slight drop in contributions from the business and industrial community in 1970-71. Nevertheless these donations, which included $18,000 for capital purposes and $115,000 for current expenses, accounted for 8% of all gift income and 19% of current support received by the University during the year. In addition, the Alumni Fund and the Parents’ Fund include a combined total of $23,064 in the form of match- ing gifts from the organizations listed on this page. Washington and Lee acknowledges with gratitude the in- terest and support of all corporations whose gifts are so essential to its well- being. CORPORATE SUPPORT BY DIRECT GRANT Listed below are those corporations that contributed to the University by direct grant during 1970-71. ‘These contributions enabled the institution to undertake many worthy educa- tional projects that otherwise would have been impossible because of a lack of funds. Xerox 34 “ °* Contributions received through the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges form the backbone of gifts from business and industry. Since 1952, hundreds of corporations have responded to the efforts of the VFIC to provide means of coordinated fi- nancial support for twelve indepen- dent colleges and universities. ‘These institutions are: Bridgewater College, Emory and Henry College, Hampden- Sydney College, Hollins College, Lynchburg College, Mary Baldwin College, Randolph-Macon College, Randolph-Macon Women’s College, Roanoke College, Sweet Briar College, University of Richmond, and Wash- ington and Lee University. Washington and Lee has benefited ereatly from the generosity of busi- nesses contributing to higher educa- tion in this manner. In 1970-71, with the Foundation receiving total sup- port of $1,035,332 from 867 contribu- tors, Washington and Lee’s share was $86,500. In the 19 years of its opera- tion, the VFIC has contributed a total of $1,085,338 to Washington and Lee. The VFIC’s total collections during the same period amounted to $12,386,000 from 10,626 contributors. Washington and Lee is particularly appreciative of this exceptional finan- cial support over the years. A list of 867 contributors is too lengthy for this report. But the Uni- versity acknowledges that each contri- butor, along with the VFIC staff, has had an important beneficial effect upon Washington and Lee University this year. | DL i) Td Lt Ma hidl i TT | skaddd hia ‘f nt { i hil } HH Ni a } ' i | i WNL ' 35 Some of Washington and Lee’s alumni and friends elected to give to the University’s endowment and cap- ital needs instead of (or in addition to) giving to meet current expenses. These generous gifts were invested in the projects the donors specified. ‘The contributors were: M. William Adelson, ’32 Joseph E. Birnie, ’27 Calhoun Bond, ’43 Edgar Boyd, ’42 Thomas H. It has always been the University’s desire that no student be denied a place in its classrooms because of financial hardship. Commendable as this desire may be, student financial aid costs the University over $400,000 a year—and the need is growing. William Clements, II, ’50 John L. Crist, Jr., ’45 Francis A.
