What, for example, does one put on the cover of a special issue that pays tribute to the unprece- dented generosity of the University’s constituents? Each donor had his own reason for giving. But we believe that overriding all other reasons was a pro- found respect for and belief in a great University — a nostalgic reflection on days past; a quiet pride in today’s prestige; an abiding faith in the realization of tomorrow’s aspirations. a ~ -» 4 7 = ~- > * ay i Mf -» > & -+ > > a 6. eA i“ 4 > fon — me ath hee a” rey “@ - fe or) ot4 oe) A QUALITY OF LEADERSHIP RosertT E. R. HUNTLEY President Washington and Lee University This may be the most significant Report of Gifts that Washington and Lee University has ever published. In terms of achievement, the past year was one of notable superlatives. It was the year during which Washington and Lee received the largest gift total in its history. And it was the year during which our Trustees announced a comprehensive projection of the financial requirements the University must meet in the decade ahead and the role that giving must play in meeting them. In the pages that follow, Mr. John M. Stemmons of the University’s Board of Trustees describes and com- ments on giving in 1971-72. Mr. Stemmons is chairman of the Achievement Council, the group charged with di- rection of all the University’s various fund-raising activi- ties. Mr. Stemmon’s enthusiastic leadership is a major factor in the large stride already made toward our initial fund-raising objective, $36,000,000 by 1976. Washington and Lee’s goals for this decade are am- bitious, but they represent no more than the minimum required to carry this University—healthy and vigorous— into a future of a quality comparable with that of the past. That task can be accomplished only through pri- vate giving. I believe, as our Trustees believe, that we owe it to this University’s family and to all who love her to state candidly her needs and to state with equal candor what your University expects of you. The hope, the expectation, is that each supporter of the University will address himself first to the question of how much he can reasonably expect to give, on an annual basis, for operating expenses—usually through the Alumni Fund or the Parents’ Fund. ‘Then our hope would be that he will address himself to the possibility of making an additional commitment to the University to assist in meeting capital needs—the physical and en- dowment requirements of the decade. Virtually from its beginning, Washington and Lee's history has borne eloquent witness to the generosity of those who shared precisely such a common concern for the future of their institution. All manner of giving has shaped our strength, including those testamentary acts of faith which unite generations in the enduring fulfill- ment that characterizes Washington and Lee. Every friend who gives to Washington and Lee, who invests in its future, should expect the University to make the best possible use of his gift. Indeed he has a right to expect that we will make the fullest possible use of every resource we have—whether those resources come to us as gifts, as income from our endowment, or as our students’ tuition. We are committed to those ob- : jectives of wisdom and prudence in ways that I believe all friends of Washington and Lee will find reassuring. One of the most inspiring developments of the past two years has been the growing nucleus of voluntary leadership joining our Trustees in seeking to achieve these unprecedented financial goals for the ’70s. The list of these alumni and other leaders is impressive in num- bers alone. But more than that, they represent a quality of leadership that only the very strongest institutions could ever hope to muster in their behalf. I extend the most profound personal gratitude to all who have helped make this record of progress during the past year. And I invite them, and all others who care about Washington and Lee and its future, to move for- ward with us against new challenges with vigor and confidence. ROBERT E. R. HUNTLEY President Washington and Lee University EERO UNPRECEDENTED GENEROSITY JOHN M. STEMMons, ’31 Chairman Washington and Lee Achievement Council Any record year is looked upon with pride. The un- precedented generosity with which the Washington and Lee family responded to the needs of the University last year makes 1971-72 our best effort so far. Our achievement was notable in two respects: the quality of leadership and the impressive monetary re- sult. Capable and dedicated leadership was seen in James H. Bierer, ’40, chairman of the Alumni Fund. He and his corps of class agents led the effort to an all-time high, exceeding their goal and posting a 23% increase over last year. No other single factor had as great an effect upon the financial health of Washington and Lee as did the Alumni Fund which accounted for 43% of the gift revenues needed to balance the 1971-72 educational and general budget. The Parents’ Fund, under the leadership of Dr. Al- bert Preston and his five class agents, also exceeded its goal and provided once again evidence of the interest and faith of parents whose sons study at Washington and Lee. The Achievement Council, composed of 28 men, made significant progress in its first official year of activity. Through this Council, Washington and Lee seeks to realize its most pressing capital requirements. Martin P. Burks, °32, and the 42 members of the Estate Planning Council were successful in completing all necessary ar- rangements for beginning an aggressive deferred gifts and bequests program. Most important, however, is to note that all these men are volunteers who have stepped forward to accept hard jobs for the University—jobs which they discharged last year with skill and effectiveness. On the opposite page are two reports. The first indicates the actual cash that Washington and Lee received in gifts and pledge payments during the 1971-72 fiscal year. Included in this report are $372,133 received for the Alumni Fund, $363,751 of which is for current support. Of the $68,152 received through the Parents’ Fund, $66,846 is for current sup- port. ‘I'he second report reflects the progress that we are making toward meeting the 1976 objective of $3,- 500,000 in current support plus $32,500,000 in capital support for a total of $36,000,000. Building on the base of $11.5 million in combined gifts from all members of the Board of ‘Trustees, the Washington and Lee Develop- ment Program has received an additignal $7.7 million in commitments, as of June 30, 1972, bringing it to 58% of its 1976 objective. This Gift Report publication clearly expresses the high regard and esteem in which the University is held by its family and other constituencies. I think that Washington and Lee fully merits this wonderful sup- port, based both on its past and upon what it can achieve in the future. —__arrie. Joun M. Thus the Class of 1976 occupies a special place in the heritage of Washington and Lee. On many occasions President Huntley has said that Washington and Lee exists for one reason: To provide the best possible education to the young men who come to W&L. It is through its graduates’ contribution to society that Washington and Lee serves mankind. LAW CLASSES No. No. % % CLAss CLASs AGENT SOLICITED DONoRS PARTICIPATION GOAL AMOUNT OF GOAL 1922 R. Orr§ THE COLONNADE CLUB One of the most significant factors in the suc- cess of both the Alumni Fund and the Parents’ Fund in 1971-72 was the establishment of the Colonnade Club to recognize donors of $100-$999 in support of current, operations. In 1971-72, more than 1,200 alumni, parents, and friends became members with gifts that totaled over $185,000. A measure of the Colonnade Club’s impact on the Alumni Fund is the fact that gifts at the Colonnade Club level accounted for 46.4% of the total dollars and 29.9% of the donors. Colon- nade Club gifts to the Parents’ Fund accounted for 35.6% of the dollars and 43.8% of the donors. In the years ahead, the Colonnade Club will play a major role in keeping Washington and Lee excellent educationally as well as sound financially. 5 Gave at Robert E. It will be awarded annually to the academic class, graduated within the last 50 years, which achieves proportionately the highest participation in the Alumni Fund. The class of 1942A was the first winner of the trophy, with a participation rate of 43.1% in the 1971-72 Alumni Fund. Frank L. LaMotte, Class Agent, will receive the trophy for the class at Fall Reunions, October 28. The year of the award, the Class Agent’s name, the class numerals and the winning percentage will be engraved on the trophy each year. Because of the great difference in size between most law and academic classes, which makes comparison of performance difficult, only under- graduate classes are eligible to compete for the Richmond Trophy. It is hoped that an alumnus, an alumni chapter, a family or an entire class will present a trophy to encourage similar com- petition among Law Class Agents. Ww 8 Gave at Robert E. Substantial business gifts, $23,951 in 1971-72, are made as “matching grants” by businesses whose em- ployees have made gifts to Wash- ington and Lee. Xerox MEMORIAL GIFTS Many alumni and friends of Wash- ington and Lee contribute to the University’s capital and _ current operating needs in the form of me- morials to fellow alumni, relatives and friends. In 1972 Benjamin W. Partlow ’21 established a scholarship fund in me- mory of his wife, Jane McCauley Partlow, with the express purpose of encouraging other alumni to make similar gifts in memory of their wives. Mr. Partlow’s concept of the fund is that each gift shall remain a separ- ate endowment, but that the income from all shall be pooled to create scholarship awards for one or more students with unusual academic or personal talents. Besides the Partlow gift, other gen- erous memorials were received dur- ing 1971-72. ‘Those honored were: Lewis W. Adams Tommy Mac Baremore, ’68 Lomas L. Barritt Mrs. Adrian Bendheim Adrian L.
