Winchester Feb. 1st/62 Dear Sister: I received your letter this morning and will reply in time for the mail today, though not exactly in the know for writing as Jacksons part of the army has had a blow up. When we left Romney Jackson, as I told you in my last letter, left Lovings force there and brought his old brigade to Winchester, when Loving without saying anything to Jackson, sent three of his brigadiers to Richmond and had Jacksons order countermanded and his, Lovings, force ordered back to Winchester, by order of Sec. War Benjamin, in consequence of which Gen. Jackson has resigned and his men swear that they will not serve under Loving. What the consequence will be I cannot tell. But if the orders of such a man as Jackson are to disregarded by such trifling people as Loving and seconded by Benjamin I [Page 2] think the Southern Confederacy is in a bad fix. But enough about that. I guess you will hear more in a day or so for I never saw a more unsatisfied set of men than the Stonewall just now. I hear that Lovings men are just as much attached to their general as we are to ours, so would not be surprised to hear of a bust up soon. In regard to my wardrobe. I was congratulating myself that I was so well off, but you seem to think that it is rather dilapidated. The only thing that I need is a coat. I will have my boots footed here and will do very well. We will go into a house Monday which has six rooms in it, so you see I will not be crowded. What a good thing it is to be at Headquarters but how long we will be there I do not know. Gen. Jackson still keeps us. [Page 3] As we are the only soldiers quartered in town we get along finely, especially among the ladies who think there is nothing equal to the L.H.V.'s or as we are called Jacksons bodyguard. I got a letter from Mr. Patton this morning in which Sallies letter was enclosed. How glad I was to see again that hand writing. Excuse me from writing more. Good bye, Ted Try and get me a gray coat if you can, anything rather than brown or blue, a light gray if possible. Ted
