May 29th/62 Charlestown Dear Sister: As Mr. Middleton goes to Lexington today I will send a letter. I received the box and was very much pleased to get it as I had just left the land flowing with milk and honey and come to a scarcer part of the world. We left W. [Winchester] on the 28th, and came to this place. The enemy have taken position near Harpers Ferry. I do not suppose we will attack them as it would be impossible to take the Maryland Heights, unless at a great loss of life. I do not see what we could accomplish unless we intended to relieve Maryland and I do [Page 2] not think that is the policy of the Government at present. I think we have come down here to stay until Gen. Jackson can get the stores et cetera from Winchester and Martinsburg. You have no idea of what we have captured. You need not think that we will attack the enemy here as Gen. Jackson is himself still in Winchester and he never stays behind when any fighting is to be done. I will enclose an old letter which I had no chance to send off. Good bye Ted
