Hagerstown, Md July 13 1863 Dear Sister: Having a good opportunity to write, I will let you know something of my whereabouts &c. Our army has been in line of battle here for two days awaiting an attack from General Meade who does not seem disposed to hurry himself about it though he may at any time. We look for it tomorrow. We are strongly entrenched, our line reaching from above Williamsport around by Hagerstown and joining the river again below Williamsport. General Johnston holds the left, General Hill the center, and General Longstreet the right. I do not think that General Lee will stay here long; he is waiting for the Potomac to fall but he will give the enemy a fight if they desire it. The army is in fine spirits, but dirty ragged and bare footed. I have had on my clothes nearly a month, my pants are nearly worn out so you may make me up two under shirts, two pairs of drawers, three pairs of socks, apair of pants and a jacket if you think you can make it to fit, if not I think I can have one made here; do not make the clothes too large, make them up and keep them on hand until we get back to Virginia. I can make [Page 2] out with what I have until we get across the river which I think will not be long. The army is in such a bad condition as far as clothes are concerned and our means of transportation are so limited and provisions so far to haul that we are compelled to recross the river. I feel rather lonesome sometimes with the few of us who are left, but dont cry. Lieuts. Lyle and Spohr who were not in the fight have joined us, so that there are now five, Lyle, Jones, Whitmore and Spohr, and myself. The rest I suppose are captured except Arnold and Paxton. We fear that some of those that were captured are wounded but do not know certainly. I have heard nothing from Cousin Sandy since the fifth. I wish that when you send my clothes you would send a small Bible if you can get one, My Testament got wet and is torn all to pieces, I have to borrow one when I want it. Goodbye. God bless you all, Your bro Ted Tell Senora [Elnora] that I got her letter yesterday and will answer soon, although if she could see me she would think the gloss was off my Blue Suit. Ted
