In this letter, written on the day Lee arrived in Lexington, Virginia soon to begin his association with Washington College, he graciously turns down G. A. White's offer of lodging (likely at his Main Street, Lexington, Virginia hotel). He instead had accepted an offer to stay at the home of Colonel Samuel McDowell Reid, a prominent local citizen and member of Washington College's Board of Trustees.
