Lee writes to his former staff officer in response to the negative and apparently inaccurate information being publicized by a "Reverend McMullins" of Baltimore, Md. Though all of the specifics of McMullins' endeavor are unclear, it is evident by this letter that the reverend had taken issue with aspects of Lee's fundraising methods for Washington College. Lee's reply suggests that Rev. McMullins' cause is refutable. He continues by offering well wishes to Col. Marshall and his family, and mentioning his own family's exploits. Lee's signature has been removed. A note at the end, in period writing, explains that the signature was cut and forwarded to a lady.
