First, this paper will focus on the environmental and housing challenges faced by those who live in poverty. Included in the discussion are challenges that are faced disproportionately by the poor and the effect on their overall well-being. Secondly, the paper illustrates how sustainable development effectively addresses current environmental and housing challenges as well as ensuring sound long-term conditions. Implementing development plans that are equitable, that address environmental challenges and promote economic growth ensures the success of these projects. Third, is a case study on the Ten Fifty B development in San Diego, CA that illustrates all three aspects of the sustainable development movement. Fourth, I will analyze the potential of similar Ten Fifty B being replicated across the country. Lastly, the paper concludes with policy recommendations to ensure the success of sustainable affordable housing. [From Introduction]
