Gaines appreciates, "the gracious spirit in which you have presented your views about the incident that took place on our campus," referring to the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of Senator Alben Barkley during his keynote address of the 1956 Mock Convention. Gaines also says, "I cannot pretend that I am in complete agreement with you as to those views, but I shall always remember the courtesy of your spirit." Gaines goes on to point out that the academic year is about to conclude and he sees nothing to be accomplished by reopening this incident on campus.
