These photographs were taken by Joy Elizabeth Putney during summer of 2014 in Auckland. The internship was with Auckland Bioengineering Institute. This was a WLU Johnson Opportunity Grant. These photographs were part of the Study Abroad Photo Exhibit on October 14, 2014. Joy Elizabeth Putney is a member of the class of 2016 of Washington and Lee University. Student statement about their experience: "I had the amazing opportunity of working at Auckland Bioengineering Institute in New Zealand this summer. I got to work with top researchers in the field, who are leading one of the biggest international research projects--the Physiome Project. Having this experience was truly unique, and I got to do conference quality research focusing on gastrointestinal signal processing. The people I worked with were knowledgeable and available, and getting to know them was a true honor. Outside of my research, I got to travel to many of the scenic locations in North Island. New Zealand is a beautiful country! I got to hike a volcano, ski down the mountain next to Mount Doom, visit Hobbiton, and go parasailing in the Bay of Islands. I would highly recommend an international internship to any undergraduate looking to broaden their horizons and learn in an unfamiliar environment. You will gain valuable experience, exposure to a culture different from your own, and lifelong friends halfway around the world."
