dc.description | Student statement about their experience: "The Herculaneum Graffiti Project was an amazing and invaluable experience. Our work included exploring domestic and commercial properties within a designated city block of Herculaneum to find inscriptions with the goal of sharing our findings onto an electric archive. The HGP group consisted of approximately 30 individuals and included graduate students, undergraduates, high school Latin teachers, and others from international locations. Not only did I learn much from the project, itself, but I also was exposed to many distinguished Classicists, who were able to offer me advice and guide me in the pursuit of Classical studies. I established lasting connections with the members of the group and absolutely recommend this program to any Classics major or someone with a passion for Roman history, epigraphy, or archaeological interests. It is astounding that the town of Herculaneum was preserved after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, and the fact that we, nearly 2000 years later, are able to decipher and examine the town's written relics is remarkable. I am so happy I was able to be a part of this project and loved my experience abroad in Italy! " | en_US |
