Student statement about their experience: "This summer, as part of the Herculaneum Graffiti Project, I had the opportunity to go to Ercolano, Italy, where the ancient ruins of Herculaneum are located. For over six years now, I have been studying the Latin language, but have never had the chance to actually go to Europe and see the wonders of this language in its home environment so to speak. This project, however, not only instilled within me a greater appreciation for the Latin language, but it also opened my eyes to the richly complex world of the ancient Romans and afforded me the opportunity to gain insight into both the inner-workings of one of the most well-preserved sites from antiquity and the lives and thoughts of everyday Roman people. Indeed, our project was focused on the epigraphy of Herculaneum, graffiti which was scratched into the plaster of walls by ancient people themselves; we then duly documented and measured each graffito; and ultimately, created entries for the discovered inscriptions in the Electronic Archive of Greek and Latin Epigraphy, a scholarly initiative which is seeking to make cultural heritage more accessible to people all across the world. I would highly encourage anyone thinking about studying abroad to enrich their college experience by going. It was an experience I’ll never forget, and I would also like to take this opportunity to once again thank those who made it possible as well."en_US
