These photographs were taken by Eleanor Caroline Bold during Winter Term of 2014 in Vienna. These photographs were part of the Study Abroad Photo Exhibit on October 14, 2014. Eleanor Caroline Bold is a member of the class of 2015 of Washington and Lee University. Student statement about their experience: "Studying abroad the Winter Term of my junior year was the best decision I ever made. While I love W&L and it was incredibly hard to leave knowing all that I'd miss, I felt it was important to get away and not only gain perspective, but give myself time to think. I recognized that I needed time in a new place with new distractions. A place that lacked the constant pressure of always planning and succeeding that our school thrives on. During my semester in Vienna I learned in the classroom, but more importantly I learned about myself. I finally found out what I would do with myself when I had free time; I learned how to navigate subway systems and feel comfortable living in a city; I learned how to get a group of six American students to Italy when the train was cancelled and arrive only a few hours behind schedule. I learned how to relax, and to do things just to do them. I became more adventurous, and when that happened, I discovered what I wanted in my life. I returned to W&L without a doubt about the path I would follow, and with a new perspective that's made me kinder, happier, and calmer. I would encourage every student at W&L to go abroad, to see what the rest of the world has to offer, and to do it alone. Only once thrown into a new place without a safety net do you really come into yourself, enriching the experience in a way that really does, pardon the cliche, change your life."
