This is a catalog from the exhibition "The Strangest Fruit" by Vincent Valdez which was held from April 27 to May 29, 2015 in the Staniar Gallery at Washington and Lee University. From the forward by the Director of the Staniar Gallery, Clover Archer Lyle: "This catalogue provides a broader context for understanding Valdez’s artwork through a diverse range of scholarly perspectives. Each essay approaches The Strangest Fruit from its author’s discipline, providing the reader with multiple lenses through which to more deeply engage the shared object of their texts: the highly disturbing pattern of widespread, institutionalized racism experienced by those with dark skin in America, a pattern that Valdez’s paintings both present and render available for critical transformation."
