The accompanying typed note describes this letter as follows. "This letter was written by a former VMI Cadet, JOHN G. JAMES, on June 8, 1929 from a Dallas, Texas hospital. He was 84 1/2 years old at the time. He stated that he entered VMI in 1862 and was at the Battle of New Market along with a younger brother, also a Cadet at VMI, by the name of F W James. Both names are on the memorial at VMI in Roll of "C" Company (3rd Corporal). The letter was a request that a rose bush be put on the grave of a former friend and servent whom he knew in school." The envelope reads, "John G. James, Dallas, Texas."
