Thesis; [FULL-TEXT FREELY AVAILABLE ONLINE] Tyler Hope Van Riper is a member of the Class of 2014 of Washington and Lee University. In the following chapters, I will introduce two of Brian Friel's most beloved plays, Translations and Dancing at Lughnasa, focusing particularly on the playwright's use of different “languages” and his emphasis on the dichotomy between tradition and modernity as a means of exploring the playwright's ambivalence toward his subjects.
