Four different mutant strains of Salmonella typhimurium were used in accordance with the Ames mutagenicity assay to detect and characterize any mutagenic properties in two common herbal teas: chaparral and eucalyptus. Although statistical verification was not obtained (due to insufficient funding, explained below), the assay shows apparent evidence of the presence of both one or more frameshift mutagens and one or more basepair substitution mutagens in the eucalyptus tea tested.
