The principle object of this work was an extensive search of the literature for possible synthetic routes to the compound tricyclo [4.4.4] tetradecane (C14H24). The synthesis of the compound was first suggested by O. B. Ramsey as part of a larger project on smthesis of exotic pure hydrocarbons . Tricyclo [4.4.4] tetradecane is of interest for several reasons. It has a unique symmetry which is appealing and challenging: its synthesis would involve interesting steric and conformational problems along several routes and the petroleum industry in general is interested in procuring pure hydrocarbons for closer studies of the effects of cyclization and branching and other structural properties on the fuel and general chemical properties of compounds of that class.
