The goal of this investigation is the clarification of the role which socialization plays in work groups. In order to reach this goal, this study will be divided into two areas. Of primary interest is the construction of a theoretical scheme which defines socialization and states some sort of relation between it and the behavioral patterns which are observed. In the second part, work groups are reviewed with attention given to structures and to the ways in which the groups assimilate new members. In addition, the importance of the socialization mechanisms with respect to life within the work groups is considered. The development o! the study proceeds from the general to the specific. Socialization as a process is discussed independently of its role in the various periods of an individual's life. After this, it is discussed with respect to its manifestation and significance in adult life. An interlude follows with the discussion of necessary concepts for the final consideration of life in work groups. In this last section, an attempt is made to tie the preceding sections together in the discussion of the work situation. [From Introduction]
